Jesus’s two-stage healing of a blind man in Mark 8:22-26 reveals the progressive nature of spiritual vision. After the first touch, the man sees “people as trees”—recognizing humanity’s cruciform nature. We are tree-shaped beings, vertical expressions of the cross that defines human existence. Everyone either embraces or flees their cross, but all share this cruciform reality.
This partial vision isn’t failure but necessary preparation. We must first recognize humanity’s cross-bearing nature before achieving complete clarity.
The second touch brings “telos vision”—sight that perceives life’s ultimate purpose and completion. The Greek word for “clearly” shares roots with Christ’s cry “It is finished” (tetelestai). Perfect sight means seeing the crucified Christ as reality’s interpretive key, understanding that tree-shaped humanity finds its meaning in Him who hung upon the tree.
Our spiritual journey moves from blindness to seeing humanity as cruciform, to finally beholding Christ crucified as the completion of all things.
